Alba’s Skills Matrix and Training Programs Increase Satisfaction, Safety (2018 Case Study)
Alba needed to stop competitors from poaching its best talent and develop leaders from the local workforce rather than relying on expatriates. Its previous programs were flawed: non-managerial employees were only promoted when a vacancy arose, even if they had higher skills; and managers were paid for years of service, rather than technical know-how. Two new programs, “Skills Matrix” and “Training Development Program (TDP),” solve this problem. Thanks to TDP, Alba promoted 400% more managers in 2017 than 2013, trained in both functional and soft skills. Alba now is on course to become one of the world’s largest single-site smelters in 2019. Alba won a Silver Award for Best Advance in Competencies and Skill Development in the 2018 Brandon Hall Group HCM Excellence Awards.
