INSTEP Building a Culture of Mental Well-being Through Certified Peer Support (Case Study)

PETRONAS implemented an innovative mental health first aid program called Mind-A-Care (MAC) Ambassador Certified Training to build a culture of mental wellbeing across their global workforce. The program trains employees to become certified mental health first aiders who can recognize signs of distress, provide initial support, and guide colleagues to professional help. Using a simplified C.A.R.E approach (Check, Apply, Reassure, Ensure), the program aims to train 1,000 ambassadors by 2027 to achieve a 1:50 ratio of mental health first aiders to employees. The initiative has already trained 460 ambassadors and shows an estimated ROI of RM 5.3 million in reduced mental illness burden.
