LinkedIn Reinvents Onboarding With the Engineering Bootcamp (2016 Case Study)
LinkedIn wanted to improve onboarding for its software engineers, who wanted more hands-on training, a longer onboarding program, and more documentation of processes, among other things. LinkedIn leadership responded with the Engineering Bootcamp, which focused on context, challenge and collaboration. The program was piloted extensively and measured at Kirkpatrick levels 1, 3, and 4. The results were tremendous: the net promoter score increased from -33 to 56, readiness to begin work increased by 68%, and the rate at which an average engineer is considered fully productive went from about three months to about a month and a half. The initiative earned a Gold Award for Best Results of a Learning Program in the 2016 Brandon Hall Group HCM Excellence Awards.
